Adaptive Sewing Patterns
Famed sewing pattern brand Simplicity has recently released a line of patterns to make items for people with needs not usually covered by sewing patterns. Called the Adaptive Collection, these patterns seek to allow people of all sewing skill levels to make an array of accessible clothing and aids for those with a variety of needs. As the brand name implies, these patterns are deemed “easy-to-sew” according to the slogan on the packaging. Most patterns come in either one size covering XS to XL, or two sizes covering a similar range.
As of the time of writing, there are currently fifteen items in the collection. Three of these are referred to as adaptive clothing, made specifically for those with mobility issues to have an easier time putting them on themselves and to be easier for assisted dressing as well. This category includes a women’s top, unisex shirt, and unisex cardigan. The patterns are customizable, with the tops able to be made with or without sleeves and the cardigans having optional upper and lower pockets and elbow patches.
Also included in the line are two patterns for recovery gowns: one for adults and one for children. The children’s recovery gown pattern comes with a pattern for pants as well, while the adult option does not include pants but does have a pattern for a “pullover fleece bed robe.” Both gowns can be made long or short and be made to open in the front or back, depending on what is easier, and have an optional pocket.
The line also includes a variety of other wearables catered to different needs. For instance, it features a long-sleeved top with port access in both the arms and neck areas that can be customized into being a hoodie. There is also a pattern pack with a variety of “casual and pretty lined chemo hats” that even have button attachments on the side for a mask to be held in place. There are wheelchair poncho blankets that can be altered to either have a belt that ties at the waist or a detachable hood. There are even adult bibs with optional pockets. Finally, the line includes a few non-wearable items that act as helpful aids. One pattern kit comes with crutch pads and bags and toe coverings for crutch users. Another contains accessories for wheeled walkers including bags, basket liners, and covers. There are hot and cold packs, walker bags, wheelchair accessories, and even stim toys available to buy patterns for as well.
